In today’s episode of Dealership Incompetence , we visit the fine folks at Regal Kia (and by fine folks, I mean idiots), who created a helpful !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to guide K900 owners through Apple CarPlay setup with their infotainment systems.
The video starts out with this view of the K900 dash.
This is in fact the K900 dash
However, when it comes time to demonstrate the steps in setup, the video cuts to a dash that is not from a K900.
Not a K900
There are two reasons why this substitution is both necessary and misleading at the same time:
1. The K900 does not have a touch screen, so you cannot demonstrate touch commands on it.
2. The K900 infotainment system is not CarPlay compatible. Not in any generation, including the newest one.
So, in summary, these folks created a nice video demonstrating how to do something that cannot be done. Why did they do this? My explanation is that they created one video for all the Kia line and just stuck on model-specific front ends and renamed the video each time. What this demonstrates instead is that these people don’t know the cars they are selling and servicing. This video has been on Youtube for a long time, and no one there seems to care.

The people that sold me the car insisted my stinger had one turbo.... Right...
settingup android auto on my stinger was a pain in the ass.... I doubt it’s Kia’s fault...but it might just be.

So do you think a bunch of snarky comments is warranted on their video? Because I’m willing.

Not a bad idea. Of course then that would make you a Youtube commenter.

Doesn’t take the cake thought. A dealer once claimed that all M4s had water inyection, not only the gts...

No way in hell I’m going to become a Youtube commenter, that is lower than low.

My understanding is that - regardless of OEM - car play and AA both rather suck, yet people still demand them and pay extra for them.
I want a display that just displays my phone’s screen, even if it’s in landscape mode. Modern phones have big enough icons to make it functional, and certain apps would just be unavailable while in motion.

This helpful video is the opposite of helpful.

It makes sense to have just one video that demonstrates the system with a new title and intro for each vehicle. No point filming the same thing multiple times when the system works the same in all the cars. A title, thumbnail, and intro specific to each car makes it more likely someone will find it in their search results.
As for why they made one for the K900 I imagine they just told some intern to make one for all the cars but nobody bothered to inform said intern that not all the cars actually support CarPlay.

I have yet to meet a dealership employee (outside of the service dept) that knows more about their cars than I do. That’s not to make it sound like I know a lot about every brand of car. It’s just that basic internet research before visiting a dealer always yields more accurate info than the dealer employee will provide.

You know what really grinds my gears? When dealers try to sell you a car and don’t know shit about it!

There are a bunch of car maintenance videos that are done like that and I hate them. I don’t want to see a generic procedure, I want to see the full deal. It’s especially bad since they often do parts with the actual car in question, and you really have to wonder how much harder it would have been to just do the full thing if they have access to the car.

I use Android Auto on my phone, and the screen is big enough for that (though frankly I prefer controlling with voice commands). It’s slow as shit to start though, which is an annoyance because then my phone locks while it is starting, and needs to be unlocked again once it finishes.

What I learned as a scientist is that to say “I don’t know” when I don’t is always preferable to speaking up and saying something wrong.

Kia has made CarPlay and Android Auto capability retroactive back to even some 2014 models, and I like that they make it pretty easy to upgrade. I like how it works on our Sedona. The biggest things I like are that Apple Maps becomes accessible, and voice commands work better with Siri and her cloud access than just the onboard processor alone for the car. Pandora access is also easier. But, people’s preferences are all over the place.

That’s what I assume happened as well. But, before taking a shortcut, know where you’re going. An acceptable thing to do would have been to make one video called “CarPlay setup on compatible Kia systems”.

Which is ridiculous, isn’t it? I mean, if they could just Google some stuff sitting at their desk waiting for me to show up, they would already be more up to speed than 90% of customers they get.

Which is pretty inexcusable considering how much free time they have and how easy it is to find the information.

I think it’s the high turnover/jumping around of the average car salesperson. Hard to master the lineup when your onto the next brand in a year or two.
To be fair, by the time I show up at a dealership I have researched the hell out of that car, down to every last option. But the sales staff should know that stuff as part of their job training.

They are trying to ensure that you get their video if you search “Optima CarPlay” or something similar. It’s all about trying to make sure it’s the first search result.

But that means all you have to do is make the generic video for compatible systems and then repost it with the different names. You don’t have to make a different front end to masquerade. In fact, what I propose is even easier than what they did.

That sounds reasonable.... A lot more reasonable than claiming a car has a feature it doesn’t.
